Wood Science and Technology III: methods to examine panel paintings and their preventive and remedial conservation Title Monitoring panel paintings: two case studies
Résumé
This paper concerns the study of mechanical behaviour after remedial conservation treatment during relative humidity variations of two European wooden panel paintings, of early 16 th century, both conserved at the Fabre Museum, in Montpellier. One panel's treatment was carried out by conservators, based on their knowledge and empirical observations while the other one was accompanied by a multidisciplinary team, specialized on wood material and mechanical engineering. Based on regular thorough condition reports and on data collected throughout long-term monitoring on the two paintings, both remedial treatments seem efficient and ensure satisfying conservation of their wooden support and paint layer.
