Tackling the Misinformation Challenge in Military Contexts: You’re correcting too much!
Résumé
To address the challenge of misinformation in military context, correction is often employed as a strategy. However, the literature on the Continued Influence Effect (CIE) suggests that attitudes can persist in alignment with false information, even after retractions, casting doubt on the effectiveness of correction to fully restore optimal reasoning. This research aimed to investigate the occurrence of the CIE within military scenarios. A total of 61 participants read four military texts designed to simulate decision-making. Two scenarios presented false information (FI), which was later retracted, while the other two did not. The results did not indicate evidence of the CIE; however, an overcorrection effect emerged. Participants' decisions were more aligned with the correction when the text contained false information, suggesting an oppositional stance against the misinformation, leading to an unexpected bias in decision-making. This study highlights an underestimated threat when dealing with misinformation.
