Investigating the 'dehumanizing gaze' towards facial difference using eye-tracking technology

Résumé

Confronting stares can be a daily challenge for people with facial difference (FD). Indeed, visual processing of faces with FD appears to differ significantly from that observed on all other human faces, and could thus be an indicator of dehumanizing processing of people with FD. Indeed, dehumanization refers both to a content of social perception (e.g., with diminished attributions of humanness-related attributes) but also to a form of perception (e.g., when being reduced to the constituent parts). The purpose of this project was thus to determine whether the specific processing of faces with FD could be considered dehumanizing. For that purpose, three eye-tracking studies (i.e., S1, S2, S3) were conducted (Total N = 224) with the two latter being preregistered on OSF. S1 revealed that the specific visual processing of faces with FD consists of an attentional capture by FD coupled with a decreased attention to the eyes. In S2 this specific visual processing was found to be related with disgust, which is an emotion precursor of dehumanization. Accordingly, the more people looked at the FD, the more they rated the face as disgusting, but only if they looked at the eyes little. This pattern of interaction was replicated in S3 on humanness-related attributes. Concretely, for individuals who dehumanized people with FD, the more they looked at the FD the less they rated the face as having uniquely human characteristics, but only if they looked at the eyes little.
