Flavius Mithridates, alias Guglielmo Raimondo Moncada

Résumé

Entry of the Brill Encyclopediae of the Qur'an on the activities of Guglielmo Raimondo Moncada, alias Flavius Mithridates, teacher of Hebrew, Aramaic and Arabic in Sicily and Italy in the years 1470-1489 and teacher of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, on the Qur'an. His quotes in the sermon of 1481, his full translation of suras 21 and 22 in the manuscript Urb. lat. 1384, his interlinear discontinuous translation of the entire Qur'an in the manuscript Vat. Hebr. 357, and his translations of tafsîr in the margins of the same manuscripts. The paper discusses the extent and limits of his linguistic and religious culture. The limits can be explained scientifically by his background: a rich Arabic-speaking and reading Judeo-arabic Sicilian culture, which was nevertheless ill adapted for translating perfectly from Qur'anic Arabic.
