The Literary Resistance of Bisexual Body in Saccage(2006) by Éric Jourdan and Call me by your name(2007) by André Aciman

Résumé

In contemporary LGBT novels, homosexuality seems to dominate literary representations, along with heterosexual ones. This dyad thus forms what is called monosexuality and marginalises other ambivalent sexualities, including bisexuality. This can be explained by the fact that the politics of Gay Liberation was based on the structure of binary opposition, formerly deployed by heterosexuality against homosexuality, for self-assertion in sexual politics and self-differentiation from heterosexuality. In so doing, bisexuality, considered too threatening for its simultaneously homosexual and heterosexual pleasures and desires, has consequently been bracketed or little represented, including in literature. Despite its lack of visibility, its presence can nonetheless be found in literary representations, though often hastily put into homosexual category. This research aims therefore to apprehend this sparsely visible sexual identity by the literary representation of bisexual bodies in two contemporary novels: Saccage by Éric Jourdan and Call me by your name by André Aciman. Bisexuality, with its ambivalent pleasures and desires, expresses itself not only through words but also and especially through its body. It leaves itself sexually almost entirely to chance and responds almost compulsively to whatever pleases it, regardless of the gender of its partner. Therefore, if the monosexual symbolic system dominates the sexual discourse in literary representations, it is by the poetic resistance of bisexual body that it asserts its existence and negotiate with the monosexual literary discourse. In this research, we will analyse the representation and the narrative of bisexual body as well as its strategies of negotiation with the dominant monosexual discourse.
