Chapter 16 - Development, production, and control of a high replacement rate recycled concrete

Résumé

In 2005, a concrete water treatment plant at Saint Cloud in the Paris region was partially demolished, and then rebuilt. At this occasion 6000 tons of 0/20 mm recycled concrete aggregates (RA) were produced on site. The public owner of the facility was very keen that all these materials be recycled on site to save natural resources, and more generally for the sake of eco-design. According to the contractor and the owner, the corpus of standards available at this time allowed the use at high rates of RA in concrete. This solution was selected for a complete recycling of the RA. This chapter describes the analysis of standards made at the time, the characterization of aggregates, the mix-design of a C25/30 concrete containing between 90 and 100% of RA, and the results of quality control. Seven years before RECYBÉTON started, this construction site appeared as a pioneer in the French landscape, demonstrating the feasibility of a full and local recycling process.
