Intriguing tree sketches
Intrigantes esquisses d'arbres
Résumé
This article is based on the study of two travel sketchbooks, nowadays part of the McCord-Stewart Museum collections in Montreal, by a British amateur artist, George Heriot (1759-1839), who spent several years in Canada working as a postmaster. The analysis is intended to help contextualizing several tree drawings included in these sketchbooks in the light of specific artistic developments of the period. Examining Heriot's technique and possible contemporary sources of inspiration, this document sheds light on Heriot's interests and his attuned practices and projects, especially regarding the apprenticeship of drawing by copying tree sketches.
