Une créature entre deux mondes : Le dragon dans la littérature médiévale anglaise
Résumé
This article considers the figure of the dragon in medieval English literature. Based on
the study of various old and middle English texts, such as chronicles, hagiographies or romances,
the status of the medieval dragon as an animal will be tackled in link with the different relations it
maintains with humans. Therefore, the dragon appears to be a creature which belongs not only to
the animal world, but also to the human world, in such a way that it remains on the threshold of
both. This article will study the different aspects of this in-between situation, such as the names of
the dragon, its behaviours and feelings, the possibility of metamorphosis and it will question the
status of the medieval dragon as a monster.
