Phonetic alignment and the phrase tone / "trailing" tone ambiguity in Irish English

Résumé

This paper explores the ambiguity between phrase tones and ‘trailing’ tones in Irish English nuclear falls. Data is examined in the context of the Constant Interval and Segmental Anchoring Hypotheses. Results show an ambiguity in that the L tone in two dialects did not appear to behave strictly as either a phrase tone or a ‘trailing’ tone, which has consequences for the annotation of these dialects.
