Visibilizing Invisibility, An Introduction
Résumé
This introduction seeks to clarify and question the contours and stakes of social (in)visibility. After an overview of the theoretical and critical thought on the issue, this paper will locate the debates in the field of visual culture studies and present the main avenues of inquiry opened by each contribution in this issue: invisibilizing strategies and the role of institutions, individual or collective struggles for visibility, counter-practices and alternative forms of visual agency and visual sovereignty. It will then venture to consider invisibility itself as a possible tactic in the age of post-visuality.
