L’immagine di Dio. Maschio e femmina in Gn 1,26-27 e nella figura di Dio

Paolo Merlo

Résumé

This paper begins by providing philological insights to enhance the understanding of certain challenges in Genesis 1:26-27, which describes the creation of humans in the image of God. Building upon these insights, it is argued that the primary purpose of Genesis 1:27 is to assert that God's original act of anthropogenesis involved creating man as a complementary pair, comprising both male and female aspects. It is crucial to clarify that this concept does not refer to hermaphroditism but rather to a human couple. In ancient Israelite religion, the feminine element held significance not only in shaping the understanding of a human person but also in defining the concept of God. Substantiating this claim, an examination of various biblical passages and archaeological evidence reveals the presence of the Asherah cult in Judah. This goddess appears to have been worshipped alongside Yahweh until the 7th century BCE. While this may seem unconventional, it aligns with the biblical assertion that man is created in the image and likeness of God, emphasizing a mysterious inherent connection between humanity and the divine. In conclusion, this paper aims to shed light on the nuanced relationship between God and humanity, as articulated in the biblical narrative, and explores the relevance of the feminine element in both human and divine contexts within ancient Israelite beliefs.
