Abstract

The Republic of Ireland’s colonial history has had an undeniable influence on its place among nations and on its positioning in relation to Third World countries. As the only European country with a post-colonial identity, special bonds of solidar- ity were forged with peoples in the throes of what were identified as neo-colonial con- flicts by certain activists, mainly republicans and leftists, but not exclusively. This was the case during the Vietnam War with the creation of the Irish Voice on Vietnam, af- ter the start of the American bombardment of North Vietnam in the mid-1960s. This article sets out to explain anti-war activism in Ireland during the Vietnam War and to demonstrate its originality, compared with movements in other countries that did not share the same post-colonial identity.
