Wood construction at the Copper Age tell site of Hotnitsa, north central Bulgaria: Four Late Chalcolithic case studies

Résumé

Between 2000 and 2017, the research project at the Copper Age tell site of Hotnitsa, located just a stone’s throw from the banks of the river Bohot, uncovered several levels of occupation dated to the Late Chalcolithic. During the last two excavation seasons of 2016 and 2017, architectural remains were systematically examined, in particular the wooden floors of four buildings (horizons 4–5). A xylological study was also undertaken. The specific preservation of the material hinders identification, but new approaches could enable the timber palaeobotanical study and a better understanding of the conservation process undergone by the remains. Our main objectives were to reconstruct the chaîne opératoire involved, from the selection of the wood (species, dimensions, etc.) to the assemblies used to construct the buildings. Focusing on wooden floors, our analysis revealed three principles of floor construction based on the timber’s organization and dimensions. The chaine opératoire approach also allows for an understanding of the planning process which starts from the raw materials acquisition step while highlighting the woodworkers’ technical finesse. Through construction techniques, the study also sheds light on larger scale concerns as the site’s organization.
