Neros Cenatio Rotunda
Nero’s Revolving Banquet Hall
La salle à manger tournante de Néron
Résumé
The arguments and clues provided by the excavations, as well as by the research carried out both by the author and by other experts, have led to the proposal to identify as the cenatio rotunda the remains of a building unearthed on the Palatine from 2009. This dining room that Nero had built in his palace was equipped with a floor whose rotating movement was driven by an hydraulic mechanism.
The article, included in the catalog of the Maschinenraum der Götter exhibition organized by the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung in Frankfurt (March 8 - September 10, 2023; extended until January 21, 2024), accompanies the presentation of a restitution in the form of a 3D model of the building, as well as a film retracing the discovery and offering a virtual tour of this cenatio rotunda.
