Pro et anti face aux projets nucléaires dans l’Italie du Nord des années 1950-1960
Résumé
The debate surrounding the building in Italy of a third nuclear
power plant, carried out between the end of the 1950s and the beginning of
the 1960s, presents two very different configurations around the installation
process. The plan to install the plant on the coast of Liguria failed in 1960,
while the same project was approved and carried out in the municipality
of Trino, in the province of Vercelli (Piedmont). Through a study of the
archives of the municipal library of Trino – which hold the reports on the
forms of mobilization carried out in the town of Sestri Levante (Liguria)
against the building of a nuclear power plant, along with the correspondence
between the mayor of Trino, local and national members of the Christian
Democratic Party (DC) and the leaders of the private company in charge of
the project – this chapter highlights the role played by local elected officials
against and in favor of the plant. In social science literature, this aspect
of the story is usually held to be of secondary importance, in a period
characterized by the triumph of state-led national energy projects.
