Advertizing roads for quality maps

Résumé

This paper will examine, from a chronological and comparative perspective (France and United-States, from nineteenth century to digital maps), how maps have been advertised, through images, symbols and headlines, in order to promote their use and to value their accuracy. It will particularly focus on route-specific maps and road maps, to explore the relationship between mention or representation of the route and communication on the map's quality. In other words, this paper changes the perspective from maps and advertising (Nicholson, 2008) to advertising for maps. By confronting examples from various sources and producers, it will show how geographical and technical features have historically been used to promote maps accuracy and will argue that route is a most recurrent topic for advertising their integrity and veracity through the 20th century to the digital turn. Thus, the ability of a map to represent a correct itinerary would be the guarantee of its value.
