Greece: Constitutional Deconstruction and the Loss of National Sovereignty

Résumé

During the last six years Greece has experienced socio-political developments that are unique for a Western state: five national elections, at least ten governments, a referendum, three economic adjustment programmes and unprecedented austerity policies with socioeconomic consequences resembling those of a war. These developments, causing a total transformation of Greek constitutional politics, were not accompanied by formal constitutional change. Instead, they have been made possible through an extended deconstruction of constitutional forms, justified through the use of emergency discourse. Is there any place for the Constitution as a valid point of reference in domestic constitutional politics?
