Mapping the everyday infrastructures of feeling: sonic transects of Paris underground

Résumé

When approached in their sensitive and aesthetic dimensions, urban transport infrastructures are usually considered as highly visual dispositifs, which convey images and representational imaginaries. However, the daily experiences of these infrastructures bring into play tactile, body-to-body, breathing, sweating, sound, etc. More than representational and embodied, these pathic experiences invite us to rethink the aesthetic modes of urban mobilities. This paper proposes a theoretical and methodological reflection on an ordinary aesthetics of transport infrastructures which we consider as infrastructures of feeling. In doing so, we aim to comprehend their active role in the formation of sensitive experiences and affective atmospheres of ordinary mobilities. This research is based on an investigation of the sonic dimensions of the metro and train spaces in the greater Paris area. A sensitive mobile methodology has been carried out, which articulates sonic go-alongs with sighted and blind users, and sound recordings. The result is expressed through a specific cartography, the sonic transects, which aims at giving flesh to this non-visual ordinary aesthetic. Organized according to a non-spatial, but temporal principle, these representations map elements relating to identity, emotions and sound atmospheres. In addition, these representations contribute to the deconstruction the classical geographies of transit spaces. Besides highlighting the sound dimensions of the everyday experience of urban mobilities, they suggest ways of mapping more-than-human and more-than-representational phenomena that are potently contained in every infrastructures.
