The role of psychological factors and physical activity in eating disorders in a student community sample.
Résumé
Introduction: Eating Disorders (ED), such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating, affect about 10% of young people. The main symptoms involve eating (restriction, excessive food intake) and weight control behaviors (laxatives, vomiting). However, psychological disorders (depression, anxiety, low self-esteem etc.) and problematic behaviors toward physical activity (PA) are also commonly associated with ED (Treasure, 2020). This study aims to assess the risk of ED in students, the PA (type, frequency and motivations for engaging in PA) and some psychological variables, and to examine their relationships based on the Jacobi risk factors model (Jacobi et al., 2004). We suppose that a high-risk of ED will be associated with high caloric cost PA, weight and shape control motivations and psychological disturbances. Method: An online survey has been sent to all students of the University of Caen Normandy in France. This survey combined questionnaires assessing ED risk, PA, depression, anxiety, body dissatisfaction, self-esteem, body image, PA dependence, interoception, perfectionism and sleep quality. First, a clustering analysis will extract the underlying risk profiles. Then, a pattern-learning algorithm will be used to predict ED risk in each extracted cluster. Finally, we will leverage on non-parametric hypothesis testing to assess the significance of each variable in the predictive models. Expected results: 1700 complete records have already been collected, and the survey will be closed in March 2023. Records will be analyzed to highlight the risk profile(s) and a better understanding of risk factors. References Jacobi, C., Hayward, C., de Zwaan, M., Kraemer, H. C., & Agras, W. S. (2004).
