Introduction

Résumé

While most major global digital platforms have more users in the Global South than in the Global North, the issues they raise are usually studied from the perspective of North American or West European experiences, and much less frequently from the perspectives of the countries of the South. This central paradox of the emerging research field on digital platforms was a starting point for this edited volume, which examines the increasing role digital platforms play in the Global South, with an emphasis on media and cultural and creative fields. This introduction notes some of the pitfalls to be avoided when undertaking such a project. It starts by highlighting the need to take into account the highly contrasting realities of the various countries comprising the Global South. While acknowledging the importance of works on platformisation, it also explains to what extent a slightly different theoretical path was followed, which places a greater emphasis on the particularities of the local contexts in which digital platforms operate. The major issues and trends that have been identified by the various authors of this book are then presented, and, finally, some directions for future research are outlined.
