The political transversality of Islamophobia

Mohammed Marwan

Résumé

This chapter examines the historical and contemporary foundations of Islamophobia in France. The chapter begins by tracing historic views of Islam and the development of Islamophobia in the historical context before examining more recent trends. The chapter argues that Islamophobic sentiment is rooted in a sense that Muslims are not permanent residents in France and that they can be dealt with through disciplinary approaches that seek to remove the presence of Muslim men and women from France.
