Impacts Of Low Pesticides Practices On Farmers’ Crop Production Decision: Estimation Based On Observed French Data

Résumé

Economic analysis of alternatives to pesticide use are generally limited by the lack of accurate data on farmers' production practices, such as detailed information on the frequency and composition of pesticide applications or on tillage practices, which may be used as alternative to pesticides. Our objective in this paper is twofold. First, we propose a procedure to introduce additional information, obtained from a survey on farmers’ production practices into the FADN database usually used for micro-level analysis of farmers’ behaviours. Second, we use this information to estimate econometric models of crop production choices for different practices in terms of pesticide uses. We especially focus on the role of tillage as an alternative to herbicide uses. These estimated economic models aim at being used to simulate the impacts of a pesticide tax on the reduction of pesticide use, taking into account the change in crop production practices induced by the tax.
