Effect of variety and technological treatment on intake of lupin seed in pigs

The utilization of lupin seed in pig diets is limited because of anti-nutritional factors that decreased dietary intake when inclusion is higher than 15%. Nevertheless, lupin seed is a feedstuff with a high content in protein which is of interest to diversify protein sources in pig diets. The experiment aimed to test whether differences in variety (n=3, Lupinus albus, Lupinus angustifolius, Lupinus luteus) or technological treatment (n=3, none, extrusion, dehulling and extrusion) increase feed intake in pigs. The experimental feedstuffs were included in nine diets at an inclusion rate of 25%. Soybean meal, wheat bran, soybean hulls, sugar beet pulp and sunflower oil were used to balance the diets for their content in crude protein (from 21.9 to 23.3% DM), crude fibre (from 6.1 to 6.5% DM) and fat (from 5.3 to 5.5% DM). These diets were offered by pairwise comparisons to two groups of 25 male pigs (mean body weight = 48.5 kg). Each group had access to four automatic feeders filled with two different experimental diets. Each pig can eat to each feeder and feeding behaviour was recorded, allowing to calculate the proportion of each diet in the daily intake as an indicator of pig preference. Each week, the two diets tested for each group changed and the experiment lasted 7 consecutive weeks. It was not possible to test L. luteus with no technological treatment because of lacking of feedstuff. Feed intake decreased by 50% the first week the pigs received the diets containing lupin seed but recovered thereafter. Whatever the technological treatment, L. albus was the less preferred lupin seed, whereas L. luteus was the most preferred (account for 92 to 98% of intake). L. luteus and L. angustifolius were preferred after dehulling and extrusion than after extrusion only but dehulled and extruded L. angustifolius was less preferred than crude seed. Extruding L. albus increased intake over crude seed and dehulled and extruded seed. The increase in the intake of lupin-based diets would be related to the reduction of antinutritional factors by the technological treatments. These treatments therefore contribute to increase the interest of these seeds.
