From the first stages of the Revolution, several counter-revolutionary thinkers strove to study the phenomenon against which they were fighting and to imagine what the future monarchic restoration should be. Among these theorists, Maistre and Bonald, formed by the reading of Burke, occupy a special place. This study is principally nourished by the analysis of their works. It has for objective the examination of the principles in the name of which they opposed the Revolution and the characteristics that, according to them, should take on the hoped-for restoration. Confronted by the voluntarist claims of the revolutionary contractualists, they were eager to reaffirm the existence and the authority of a natural order, of which only a traditional Christian monarchy could guarantee the existence and the benefits. However, being dependent on their initial intellectual training, these counter-revolutionary theorists exhibited nevertheless, from time to time and probably unconsciously, the influence of certain features of philosophical modernity.
