              <p>Age-hardenable aluminium based alloys (AA) develop their properties due to their precipitation microstructure, which can be adjusted by appropriate heat treatments. It is already known that pre-straining accelerates the precipitation kinetics. However, the effect of hardening precipitates on dislocation sub-structures formed during plastic deformation is much less investigated. Such analysis is essential to better understand the effect of straining on further coarsening of precipitates critical for mechanical properties of aluminium based alloys. Furthermore, a more detailed understanding of dislocation behaviour can be used as well to model thermomechanical treatments in precipitation hardened materials. In the present work the interaction between S-phase precipitates and dislocation sub-structures is quantitatively investigated in AA2024. On one side the effect of pre-straining on S-phase precipitation is analysed. On the other side the effect of S-phase on dislocation sub-structures formation is analysed. Cold rolling was the selected deformation mode. Precipitates were analysed mainly through transmission electron microscopy and dislocations substructures mainly through EBSD data.Experimental evidence shows an accelerating effect of pre-straining on the different stages of precipitation (nucleation, growth and coalescence). This effect may be used for a better control of the precipitate’s distribution enhancing mechanical resistance. To analyse the effect of S-phase on dislocation sub-structures formation, the T3 state (without S-phase) and the T8 state (peak hardness aged, with maximum fraction of S-phase precipitates) where plastically deformed under the same conditions. Experimental observations show an important influence of the phase on the formation of dislocations sub-structures, mainly of the disorientation of the sub-boundaries. Those results would give important material for analysing recovery and recrystallization during subsequent annealing.</p>
