Jorf El Hammam (JEH) : faunal report for Leakey Fundation, 8 pages

Résumé

The study of the faunal material was made on the whole stratigraphic sequence (layers 1 to 5) and from the different units previously described in this report. Generally, the material was well preserved as indicated by the very abundant microfauna and avifauna remains. In some cases, a compact and thick calcite gangue was present on some pieces limiting the observations. It was therefore necessary to superficially treat these pieces with acetic acid HC2H3O2 (basic domestic vinegar 8%) and in very rare cases with Hydrochloric acid H3O+Cl−. The teeth of mammals which are often better preserved than the bones in archaeological contexts were not abundant suggesting for now limited acquisitions. The bones are fragmented and only a few epiphyses and phalanges could be observed. Nevertheless, anthropisation is clearly attested by burnt bones and the presence of some large mammals in the cave. Here, we present the preliminary faunal composition of JEH for this campaign 2022, focusing on some mammalian species elements and their potential informations for JEH. The best-preserved pieces were photographed, measured and described in a database (n~100) and best-preserved pieces were modeled in photogrametry (n=5). The matrix-plot (Fig. 1) clearly shows that the frequencies of the taxa are not significantly different between the different layers of the sequence. Singles remains of a Bovini/Equini (n=1), a Felinae (n=1) as well as a Struthionidae (n=1) in respectively layers 1, 2b and 3 produced a bias artefact of the maximum frequency.
