Digitization of the cast collection of Homo erectus remains from Zhoukoudian, China

Résumé

The Middle Pleistocene hominin assemblage from Zhoukoudian includes nearly 200 skeletal and dental remains belonging to a minimum of 45 individuals (representing children and adults). The assemblage is exceptional for its anatomical diversity (with four crania, 11 mandibles, 147 teeth and 11 postcranial elements). The vast majority of the hominin remains were found between 1921 and 1937, during the excavation of the sediments of Locality 1, dated to 780–680 ka. Originally attributed to Sinanthropus pekinensis and dubbed ‘Peking Man’, the fossils were later lumped within the Homo erectus hypodigm. In 1941, during World War II, the collection was lost during transport from the Peking Union Medical College (Beijing) to the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH, New York). Today, the only evidence of the lost assemblage includes the detailed description of the fossils with pictures and radiographs published by Black and Weidenreich, and a series of 130 first-generation, high-resolution plaster casts of crania, teeth and post-crania curated at the AMNH. We present here the preliminary results of our work aiming to create a virtual archive that will be published online and accessible to the scientific community. We obtained high-resolution surfaces of the postcranial and large cranial elements using Einscan Pro scanners. We scanned dental casts with both laser-based and microCT (GE Phoenix) scanners, and we found that microCT scans were more adapted to investigate teeth. Moving forward, these surface data will be published online and accompanied by key archival records, and measurements from original casts and surface models.
