Identification of the Perceptual Characteristics and Personalized Educational Progressions for Children with Deafblindness and Other Severe complex Disabilities

Résumé

This presentation is devoted to presenting the progress of research focused on identifying children's functional perceptual abilities and needs. It summarizes the knowledge and experience of researchers, parents, and practitioners to develop structured protocols for identifying visual and auditory perceptual abilities in children with deafblindness and severe complex disabilities. The functional identification of individual perceptual specificities is most important for two groups of children 1) when auditory and visual impairments (or their degrees) are not diagnosed in the context of severe multiple disabilities; 2) when sensory impairments are considered, but under certain conditions, it looks like the child can respond to visual and/or acoustic stimuli. The aim of this research is to develop structured protocols for the identification of visual and auditory perception abilities in children with complex and multiple disabilities. The identification is based on behavioral responses and allows parents and professionals to describe in detail the child’s ability profile and create an appropriate individual curriculum. The research perspectives will be to create: A guideline on identification of visual and auditory perceptual characteristics in children with deafblindness and severe multiple disabilities, easy to use at home or institution; A guideline on composition the individual educational progressions based on the result of an assessment with examples of personalized educational programs
