Geoffrey Chaucer (ca. 1342/3–1400)

Jonathan Fruoco

Résumé

Geoffrey Chaucer (was an English author, widely considered to be one of the greatest poets of the Middle Ages. Born in 1342/3 in London, Chaucer grew up in a family of wealthy vintners and received a good education. He was well-versed in Latin, Italian, and French, as well as English, and his writing shows his familiarity with the classics and with the most important works of his time. Chaucer is best known for The Canterbury Tales, which he began writing in the late fourteenth century. The collection of stories is set against the backdrop of a group of pilgrims (knight, miller, cook, pardoner, etc.) travelling from London to Canterbury and offers a vivid portrayal of life in medieval England. The variety of genres and tones of the tales reflect the poet’s all-encompassing approach to spirituality, philosophy, and literature.
