The APA Publication Norms and Globalisation: One Without the Other?

Résumé

In sociology, globalisation represents “the breaking down of national boundaries because of advances in communication, trade, and travel” (Henslin, 2015, p. 34) and occurs through five flows, or scapes as Appadurai called them (1996). Due to globalisation, cultural diffusion is inevitable, and some even label it “cultural homogenization” (Hooker, 2012, p. 405), “cultural domination” (Schaefer, 2013, p. 58), or “McDonaldization and Americanization” (Mufwene, 2010, 31). Nevertheless, cultural hybridisation and glocalisation counterbalance the adverse effects of globalisation (Bruce & Yearley, 2006; Macionis & Plummer, 2008). In parallel with sociology, we propose to consider disciplinary communities as societies (cf. Becher & Trowler, 2001), which, like any other society, partake in the process of globalisation: cultural traits of disciplinary communities transcend the boundaries of the communities and become accepted by others. Cultural elements of disciplinary communities circulate through the five scapes (e.g., institutional and governmental funds, international education and research programmes, Open Access, LinkedIn). In the process of such cultural diffusion, the cultural traits can be embraced as are or can undergo modifications to better correspond to the needs of the receiving disciplinary community. To illustrate the functioning of globalisation at the level of disciplinary communities, we suggest examining the role of the APA’s “standards for scientific communication” (APA, 2010, p. xiii) in research publications. On the one hand, the APA publication norms have been adopted, entirely or with modifications, by disciplinary communities across the globe, which signals globalisation at work, or as some would argue, the “Anglicization [Americanisation] of published research” (Hyland, p. 179). On the other, the APA norms allow members of various disciplinary communities to have “effective scholarly communication” (APA, 2019, xiv) and, hence, extend their scientific reach to a larger audience. Finally, we shall offer some examples of teaching APA norms.
