Comparison of non-destructive with drilling elemental investigation of heavily debased quadrigati
Résumé
We performed elemental analysis of the core metal of Apulian quadrigati, a special kind of coin pertaining to the early coinage of the Second Punic War. By drilling the coin edges we sampled sufficient amounts of metal with minor invasive damage to the coins. The same coins were investigated earlier by nondestructive techniques, and here, for the first time, we provide comparative results on a significant sample of 17 specimens, drawing conclusions relevant to numismatics.
