Superconducting motor associated with a superconducting power train

Résumé

It is possible with a fully superconducting machine to achieve a very high-power density. Torque oscillations are low, less than 10% for all configurations. The propulsion system of an aircraft may include several superconducting elements. The main remaining problem is that of optimization, considering the losses in the superconductors and the non-active elements of the machine. In this paper we will present the dimensioning of a part of this system: the propulsion motors, the power electronics at cryogenic temperature and a superconducting power distribution cable. This paper presents some results of the investigations carried out in the frame of the IMOTHEP project (Investigation and Maturation of Technologies for Hybrid Electric Propulsion). We performed a state of the art of power converter performances in order to estimate the most appropriate devices. IGBTs and MOS seem to be the most promising because of their good performance at cryogenic temperatures and their availability at the required motor ratings. Then, a quick comparison is made between the different inverter topologies. Finally, a technique for calculating the converter losses and estimating the initial weight will be presented. These power converters will be fed by a superconducting cable. An essential point is the structure of the superconducting cable for which it will be necessary to determine the optimal technology for the circulation of fluids. Moreover, it is necessary to study (RE)BCO or MgB2 superconducting materials whose densities and performances are very different. The last component to be optimized is the superconducting motor. We will present detailed calculations for this purpose.
