FCL behaviour of REBaCuO tapes under different mass flow rates

Résumé

Superconducting materials are becoming increasingly popular in electrical systems, particularly devices that use REBaCuO tapes, which are in widespread demand due to their high current carrying capacity and also their ability to limit fault current. Several previous investigations on fault current limitation (FCL) have been conducted in a pressurised nitrogen bath or at atmospheric pressure. However, the behaviour of superconducting cable fault current limiters (SCFCLs) can be influenced by cryogenic fluid flow, which can greatly enhance the heat exchange between the HTS tapes and the fluid. This paper explores the impact of mass flow on fault current limitation operated by REBaCuO tapes as well as the evolution of the recovery time after fault isolation. A number of commercially available tapes will be tested under conditions similar to those encountered in an SCFCL to assess the effect of mass flow in an overcurrent situation. The experimental setup including a circulation pump, the device under test and all measuring instruments will be presented in detail. The experimental results will be accompanied and compared with a finite element model based on a coupled magnetothermal simulation of the superconducting tapes.
