Human Origins Heritage: Exploring the Way toward a Scientific Participatory Program in Sangiran

Résumé

Sangiran is a vast and populated UNESCO World Heritage site. Its importance regarding knowledge about human evolution is considered crucial. This combination of parameters can be an opportunity to develop a more community-based monitoring of the heritage. This could also improve the conservation of the site itself. Considering the orientations of the Pucung excavation in Sangiran, widely involving local workers, we developed their participation and promoted formation among them. This allowed us to recruit the locals on more diverse field activities, as well as to participate to the Human Origins Heritage pedagogical program in 2018 and 2019. The success of this development and of some participatory workshops held during those two programs now encourage us to emphasize the participatory approach in Sangiran, building on several steps in this direction.
