Exploring the Paleogene Paris Basin fossil record of Fabaceae: Implications for understanding the evolutionary history of Legumes

Fabaceae, commonly known as the legume or pea family, is one of the largest and most diverse plant families in the world. The most diverse and ecologically important genera within the family are found in the tropics, where they constitute a crucial component of the tropical ecosystem. The family is particularly recognizable by its simple dry fruit that dehisces on two sides, the organization of its flowers, often having a specialized structure, and its characteristic wood anatomy. The fossil record of Fabaceae is extensive, with more than 1200 occurrences spanning over 75 million years.
The Paris Basin has contributed to the fossil record of Fabaceae for over a century. The pioneer work of Adolphe Watelet and the successive revision of Paul-Honoré Fritel focused on fruit and leaf remains occurring during the Eocene. Additional diversity arises from pollen studies during the 20th century, as well as studies of fossil wood anatomy. At the turning point of the century, the exploration of the Eocene Le Quesnoy site revealed Fabaceae fruits and seeds preserved as lignite, as well as a large amount of amber produced by a Fabaceae member. In addition, a flower and immature fruit were found included in the amber. Lastly, Fabaceae seeds were found in the Thanetian Rivecourt site, and new wood was found in the historical collection of the Eocene of Cuise-La-Motte.
The aim of this study is to reassess the fossil record of Fabaceae in the Paris Basin and to formally describe and identify new fossils from Le Quesnoy, Rivecourt, and Cuise-La-Motte. Our study demonstrates a huge diversity of morphotypes for the Fabaceae family, with affinities compatible with a tropical climate during the Early Paleogene in the Paris Basin. The biogeographic history of the family and genera is studied and compared with other clades.
