The Bestiary of AI. A Decision-making Tool for the Design of Future Companion Species

Julien Pierre

Résumé

If AI are our next “companion species”, a Bestiary of AI could display what kind of creatures will populate our future. We already have access to this future, in laboratory and market products and promises (AI, social robots, vocal assistant, etc.), and in fictional characters (novels, movies, comics, etc.). The Bestiary draws up the- catalogue of these artificials creatures, and presents the extent of their relationship with humans. This database also shows how the media intertwine sources of inspiration in cultural hybrids (between market and fiction) Such review allows AI designers to identify which imaginaries are structuring their own work, and which are framing the adoption of AI by users. In this chapter, we unveil how we frame the Bestiary and how we used it as a decision-making tool. Resulting from an action-research with a French company working on Emotional AI at home, the Bestiary is part of an ethics of design, associating both a situated ethics located as close as possible to users and designers, and an ethics of virtues, based on affective dispositions of users, designers and AI. This conceptual and instrumental combination could renew the deontological approach. It would allow all stakeholders to benefit from an operational ethical framework leading to the deployment of socially and ecologically sustainable AI.
