Motivation for participation in citizen sience: a bibliometric analysis

Résumé

This paper presents the findings of the bibliometric coupling analysis carried out to explore the research on the motivations for participation in citizen science. Different disciplines that constitute a foundation for the participation motivations in citizen science will be examined. This way, it is possible to understand which knowledge domains have shaped the current literature on motivations to participate in citizen science. Understanding the origins of participation dynamics in citizen science plays an important role in analyzing the existing mechanisms for knowledge generation and enables to incentivize participation by developing new methods. The analysis is based on all the articles retrieved from Web of Science, which focus on motivation of participants. A total of 885 articles were retrieved, and a clustering analysis carried out based on common citation patterns between articles to identify main knowledge domains.
