              <p>Stormwater runoff is one of the major vectors in the transfer of microplastics to the natural environment. Urban water management infrastructures offer the opportunity to investigate the source terms by identifying and quantifying the microplastics (MPs) accumulated in the different compartments. Sediments that accumulate in detention basins are assumed to incorporate this synthetic particulate pollution. Based on this assumption, stormwater detention and retention structures can be used as an indicator of MPs pollution: these basins collect stormwater runoff from a predefined urban catchment. Ten detention basins were selected according to its related urban watershed typology. Catchments were classified according to the majority land use pattern to determine possible links between activities (urban, industrial and commercial or agricultural) and the contents and types of MPs accumulated in the collected sediment samples. Microplastics are extracted from sediments using a protocol that includes densimetric separation and oxidation of organic matter. They are identified and characterized by FTIR analysis. Concentrations measured were ranged from 1,833 to 612,000 MP/kg dry weight sediment. The analysis tends to confirm that occurrences of MPs are significant in these structures. The high heterogeneity between the measured contents depends on the land use of the watershed. Between 3 and 10 types of polymers with a majority of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) are observed.</p>

            <abstract xml:lang="fr">
              <p>Les eaux pluviales sont considérées comme l’un des vecteurs majeurs dans le transfert des microplastiques vers le milieu naturel. Les infrastructures de gestion des eaux urbaines offrent l’opportunité d’étudier les termes sources par l’identification et la quantification des microplastiques (MPs) présents dans les différents compartiments. Les sédiments qui s’accumulent dans les bassins de rétention sont supposés intégrer cette pollution particulaire synthétique. Sur la base de cette hypothèse, les ouvrages de rétention des eaux de ruissellement peuvent être utilisés comme indicateur de pollution aux MPs : ces bassins recueillent les eaux pluviales ruisselant sur un bassin versant urbain (BVU) prédéfini. Dix bassins de retenue ont été sélectionnés selon la typologie des bassins versants urbains pour lesquels ils servent d’exutoire. Les bassins ont été classés selon le profil majoritaire d’occupation des sols pour déterminer de possibles liens entre les activités (urbaines, industrielles et commerciales ou agricoles) et les teneurs et types de MPs présents dans les échantillons de sédiments collectés. Les microplastiques sont extraits des sédiments grâce à un protocole comprenant une séparation densimétrique et une oxydation de la matière organique. Ils sont identifiés et quantifiés par analyse FTIR. Les concentrations mesurées sont comprises entre 1 833 et 612 000 MPs/kg de sédiments poids secs. Les résultats de l’étude tendent à confirmer que les MPs se stockent en quantité importante dans ces ouvrages. La forte hétérogénéité des concentrations mesurées dans les sédiments dépend de l’occupation des sols du bassin versant. Entre 3 et 10 types de polymères sont observés, avec en majorité du polyéthylène (PE), polypropylène (PP) et du polystyrène (PS).</p>
