Typology of third-places
Résumé
The term "third place" was coined in 1989 by Ray Oldenburg who called them "third places". The definition of this term has evolved over time, as have these places, which are becoming more democratic and diversified both in terms of the services they provide and the actors who create them.
Although each "tiers-lieu" is viewed as unique, researchers such as Raphael Besson have established a typology to better understand their role and development. He identifies the following 5 categories: business, innovation, cultural, social, public services and innovation third places. Can we refine this typology?
To answer this question, the team of LISST -CIEU Vilagil research is based on a survey of third places in Toulouse Métropole, Sicoval and PETR Pays Portes de Gascogne, and more specifically on semi-directed interviews with the managers of 28 of them. Of the 28 interviews, 14 were conducted in Toulouse Métropole, 4 in Sicoval, 7 in the PETR, 1 outside the Vilagil study territory and 2 were itinerant.
