              <p>In this work, sparse metasurfaces are proposed to reduce the scattering cross section (SCS) of metallic cylinders illuminated by a plane wave. The design methodology of the sparse metasurfaces is based on the numerical calculation of Green's functions. The diameter of the metallic cylinders is of the order of the wavelength at the operating frequency of 5 GHz. In a first step, we design fully passive metasurfaces capable of reducing scattering in desired directions. Then, we investigate the concept of cloaking by reducing not only the back-and sidescattering, but also the forward-scattering of the metallic cylinder through the incorporation of active components in the metasurface.</p>
