Telling the tale of collapse : collapsology through the lens of the story and the imaginary

Marianne Chouteau

Résumé

The intention of collapsologists is to make sense of current events (climate change, natural disasters…) and, whilet averting the oncoming catastrophe seems impossible, to at least prepare to meet it head on. Over the years, the community has structured and garnered increasing media coverage. It has infiltrated conventional and social media, set up a think tank, and shares its ideas in articles, books and conference papers. This paper focuses on the imaginary of those collapsology stories and the way they produce anxiety. Our analysis is based on five of the stories' characteristic themes : the plot, the characters, the atmosphere, the rhythm and the (un)certainty.
