Long and short term effects of anthropogenic developments on the riparian communities of the Rhône
The functioning of riparian environments of the Rhône River has been strongly impacted by successive developments that have favored numerous landings and limited the expression of hydro-geomorphological processes in the channel and laterally. Recent studies on alluvial forests and herbaceous communities on gravel bars have allowed us to understand the effects of these developments in the long and short term. The results have shown a strong impact of the rectification works on the trapping of fine sediments. These recently landed and undisturbed surfaces favored the rapid development of an alluvial forest rich in exotic species and not very favorable to the regeneration of pioneer trees. In the channel, the diversion and regulation of flows have favored the emergence of important alluvial surfaces often concerned by overbank fine sedimentation. These habitats, although hosting contrasting communities along the lateral gradient, tend to be dominated by clonal species with high cover. The cumulative impact of developments on the Rhône River have greatly reduced the inflow of bottom load and the renewal of riparian habitats by erosion, and have thus led to a taxonomic and functional impoverishment of riparian communities. The restoration of pioneer habitats along the Rhône corridor must involve complementary approaches including the reactivation of bedload supply and greater seasonal variability of flows in the by-passed channels.
