Semantic analysis of bitstreams: Application to ring oscillator detection for FPGA security
In this work, we propose a new method for detecting ring oscillators characterized by combinatorial loops. These circuits are currently undetected by conventional bitstream analysis tools, all of which are based on reverse engineering. We analyze the bitstream from a semantic point of view and propose a two-dimensional model (image). The model allows us to identify features related to the presence of ring oscillators in the FPGA bitstream image. A proof-of-concept is demonstrated on the Stratix-IV-like FPGA architecture.
