The French Supreme Administrative Court Finds the Use of Facial Recognition by Law Enforcement Agencies to Support Criminal Investigations "Strictly Necessary" and Proportional

Résumé

The Conseil d'Etat dismissed a legal challenge initiated by the French NGO 'La Quadrature du Net' which claimed that the the use of facial recognition by law enforcement agencies in criminal investigations to help identify suspects who appear in the TAJ System ("Traitement des antécédents judiciaires"-Criminal Case History Database) did not meet the EU Law Enforcement Directive's "absolute necessity" and proportionality requirements.
