Résumé
The Kieler 1 site was located downstream from the juncture of two incised valleys in the Little Platte River drainage basin, in the Dickeyville Bottoms in southwestern Grant County Land, Wisconsin, United States. It was first identified in 1996. In 2003 and 2004, it was excavated by the Great Lakes Archaeological Research Center (dir. Rhiannon Jones and Jennifer Haas) during the reconstruction work of an highway. The cultural assemblage indicates occupations related to different periods: Late Archaic Durst phase (1000–500 BC); Early Woodland Indian Isle and Prairie phases (500 BC–AD 100): the most substantial occupation occurred in the Prairie phase (100 BC–AD 100) when the site may have been a residential camp; Middle Woodland Millville phase (AD 200–500). Excavated material includes lithic, faunal, pottery and various modern remains (charcoal remains are excluded in this presentation).
