The Topology and Atomicity of Classifiers
量词修饰名词时的双重语义要求-拓扑性和原子性
Résumé
This article offers a semantic-syntax analysis to Chinese classifiers. We argue against the dichotomy of count/mass classifiers or of lexical/functional classifiers. Instead, we propose that Chinese classifiers constitute a semantically uniformed word class and they are all lexical, i.e. nominal. We further argue that classifiers can be considered as adnominal modifiers, whose denotation intersects with the denotation of the noun they modify. They have to satisfy the topological and atomic requirements when modifying nouns.
