Toward A Multi-Leveled Coordination Of Sub-Models In Spatial Model Coupling

The soil is a highly heterogeneous system where numerous processes interact and provide ecosystemic services. Spatial model coupling proposes to represent such system by classifying existing processes as a sub-model and determining interaction rules (between sub-models) using the space as a communication media. Such modeling approach is quite intuitive for the modeler. Nevertheless, it require a conflict management protocol. For example, a sub-model acting at a macro level should affect dynamics realised at a micro level by sub-models. Therefore, conflicts occur when resources of the space cannot support the demands. In order to maintain the coherency of the simulation, these conflicts have to be managed at various levels. We promote a spatial oriented coupling approach allowing the space to manage conflicts between sub-models. We used the Influence and Reaction principle from [Ferber and Müller, 1996] to formalize sub-model interactions. A Coordination Unit manages, analyses interactions and their impact on the space then detect conflicts and resolve them by using negotiation protocols. This approach has been implemented as a Gama plugin and tested on a homogeneous space. Comparative results suggest that using the Coordination Unit gives more precise indication on how resources of the space are consumed by sub-models compared to the other model in which the conflict management system was not implemented. However, the approach has to be adapted for multi-level configuration in order to fit soil modeling purposes. To do so, we discuss in this paper which methods can be added to our model coupling approach to fit our modeling needs.
