Exhibited Thoughts of Architecture

Résumé

In recent decades, architecture exhibitions have become the subject of a specific study, as corroborated by the international diffusion of conferences and publications dedicated to this theme. Several essays discuss the relationship between architecture on display and publics, and the need to adapt the specific language of the discipline to support processes of presentation of architecture in its innumerable declinations. In particular, the studies have highlighted an evident, but essential problem: exhibiting architecture implies the translation of works, which by their nature cannot be contained in the exhibition space, into forms, images, installations, and devices capable of being framed in limited environments such as exhibition halls. The expansion of studies on architecture exhibitions has been fostered by the growing diffusion, starting from the seventies of the 20th century, of public and private places, museums, research centers, and institutions dedicated to the presentation, exhibition, and divulgation of architectural heritage. The issue of the Journal M+ Journal of museum studies originates from these researches, but with the aim to begin filling the gaps still present from a historiographical and design point of view in this important chapter of architecture. The aim is to start defining a renewed methodological tool for historical-critical analysis that could provide the necessary answers to the scientific, professional and social community engaged in the investigation, production, and fruition of these events. The issue focuses in particular on the role of exhibitions in the construction, redefinition, and presentation of architecture, in its theoretical, cultural, social, and political foundations. Over the years, architects, artists, critics, and curators produced an extensive corpus of architecture exhibitions. This corpus shows how these exhibitions 1) constitute by themselves actual manifestos capable of redefining the foundations of the architecture project 2) contribute to expanding the investigation around the concept of space 3) offer places of discussion and production of experimental projects 4) convey new ideas of city and collectivity 5) expose, to the publics, the cultural principles of the architecture project 6) challenge traditional display formats with immersive and multidisciplinary experiences 7) reflect over collateral problematics, such as social and environmental sustainability; circular economy; and social engagement.
