Hacking public benches: hacktivism, acts and ideologies
This article questions the modalities of action of urban hacktivism. It focuses on the uses
and appropriations of public benches, and their consequences. In the name of hygiene strategies, planning policies modify or eliminate access to street furniture. However, the intermediary position of the bench in the social fabric opens up possibilities for other mediations. More than hacking, hacktivism fights sometimes fiercely against such discriminations. We will show that while it is an “anti-system” practice, hacktivism is above all the expression of a democratic consciousness, which seeks to replace the body in space in order to register it again in the social.
