From Owls to Eagles. The metallic stocks of Egyptian coins (5th century BC-1st century AD)
Résumé
The Egyptian coinage is documented by elemental analyses carried out at the IRAMAT-CEB laboratory (LA-ICP-MS, FNAA) of gold, silver and bronze coins over 6 centuries, back up by analysis provided by the RACOM project on late Ptolemaic silver coins. Following the Debasement conference paper dedicated to the metallic content of Egyptian coins from the 5th to the 1st century BC (Faucher, Oliver 2020), we propose to explore the use and evolution of metallic stocks in Egypt from the Achaemenid period to the reign of Nero. This study relies on a very precise knowledge of the different coins circulating in the country. The analytical data are discussed based on both hoards and output volumes with firm chronological ground. We therefore propose a new interpretative framework by identifying several decisive moments when coins in circulation are melted down to provide raw material for the new series. This hypothesis is supported by other evidence such as manufacture or new monetary symbols.
